Moving Together Towards Co-designing in Research – A Unity Health Research Month Event

On November 19th, join Unity Health Toronto for an interactive panel discussion to explore how to include patients, community partners and end-users in the co-design of research to maximize impact. Hear from experts in this field, share ideas and acquire lessons learned from past experiences.

About the speakers:

Emily Nicholas Angl

Emily Nicholas Angl’s patient journey has taken her through ER’s, OR’s, MRI’s and many acronyms in between. Her broad range of experiences led to a keen interest in how patients can become partners in their own care and in health system improvement. Emily has been helping bring the patient voice to Canadian health care for over eight years. She previously sat on the board of Patients Canada and has worked as a patient advisor and patient engagement consultant with hospitals, government agencies and other organizations across Canada. Emily also facilitates workshops for both patients and providers which explore strategies for, and barriers to, patient engagement. Emily now‎ works as Director of Health Engagement and Communication with Reframe Health Labs, founded by Dr. Mike Evans, where she specializes in bringing the patient perspective to RHL’s evidence-based approach to health and wellness communication.

Karen Born, MSc PhD

Karen Born is Knowledge Translation Lead for Choosing Wisely Canada. She is responsible for the dissemination of campaign content to patients and the public and the integration of Choosing Wisely Canada into medical education. Karen also helps organize the Choosing Wisely international collaboration. Karen co-founded the health care policy blog, www.healthydebate.ca, and is an Assistant Professor in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.

Melissa Courvoisier

Melissa Courvoisier is a research coordinator in the Knowledge Translation Program at the Li Ka Shing Knowledge Institute, St. Michael’s Hospital, Unity Health, where she works on various capacity building initiatives in knowledge translation and patient-oriented research. Ms. Courvoisier has a background in adult education and is particularly interested in using critical pedagogy to design, deliver, and evaluate inclusive and innovative in-person and online training interventions that build capacity at the individual, organizational, and systems level.

Ms. Courvoisier holds a B.A. from the University of British Columbia and a M.Ed. from York University.

Dr. Mina Tadrous, PharmD MS PhD

Dr. Mina Tadrous is currently a scientist at Women’s College Hospital (WCH) Institute for Health System Solutions and Virtual Care (WIHV). He is also an investigator with the Ontario Drug Policy Research Network (ODPRN) and ICES adjunct scientist. Mina’s research interests lie in drug policy research and the post-marketing surveillance of safety and effectiveness of medications used to treat chronic diseases.

Zahra Bhimani

Zahra Bhimani is the Research Program Manager of The Canadian Adaptive Platform Trial in Intensive Care (CAPTIC) program, funded by the CIHR-SPOR (Canadian Institute for Health Research – Strategy for Patient Oriented Research). CAPTIC is a team of clinicians and researchers based out of St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada dedicated to improving the standard of care in the intensive care unit (ICU) across Canada.
