At a time when the number of migrants and displaced persons around the world is dramatically rising and the debate in Canada is becoming increasingly ideological and polarized, the Global Migration and Health Initiative organizes a conversation on refugees today - their identity, reality, and the challenges they face, health and health-related but not only - as seen by three presenters who contribute quite different if complementary perspectives.
Mr. Jean-Nicolas Beuze, UNHCR Representative in Canada. Mr. Beuze represents a UN agency that is responsible for protecting and advocating for millions of persons, following a well-established set of official definitions and rules.
Ms. Cynthia Guignard, a EuroRelief volunteer who has lived with refugees in the Moria Refugee Camp, on the Greek island of Lesvos, witnessing the reality of their daily lives and collecting, first-hand, their stories.
Dr. Andrea Cortinois, an Assistant Professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, University of Toronto. As an applied researcher, Dr. Cortinois constantly struggles with pre-conceived ideas and problematic definitions, while reflecting on migration as a social determinant of health in a rapidly-changing world.
We expect that the three contributions will create constructive tensions and stimulate important questions that, while not necessarily answered during the event, will be shared and discussed with the audience.
The event will be chaired by Professor Denise Gastaldo, Associate Professor at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto.
