Short Description:

Access Alliance Multicultural Health and Community Services (AAMHCS) is a Community Health Centre that aims to provide services and addresses system inequities to improve health outcomes for the most vulnerable immigrants, refugees, and their communities. The Centre envisions a future in which Toronto’s diverse communities achieve health with dignity.

The newcomer mental health promoter plans, implements and evaluates mental health promotion programs/ initiatives in accordance with the strategic directions of the Centre, and integrates an anti-oppression health promotion focus into the work of the Centre. 

The newcomer mental health promoter functions as a member of a multi-disciplinary team working with staff, program participants and the broader community to implement health promotion strategies as outlined in the Ottawa Charter and Declaration of Alma Ata. The newcomer mental health promoter will not only aid in client wellbeing, but enhance the knowledge of program staff in the use of diverse modalities as an effective approach to mental health support. 

Responsibilities:

Mental Health Promotion

  • Work with external organizations, and community groups to identify newcomer, immigrant, refugee mental health needs and work in collaboration with the community to plan for and implement strategies to support community achieve better mental health and wellbeing.
  • Be familiar with and use diverse mental health and wellbeing promotion strategies and therapeutic modalities including mental health education, social prescribing, peer leadership, policy building and re-orienting mental health services to support newcomer, immigrant, refugee increase control over and improve their wellbeing.
  • Work within the organization, in close collaboration with diverse teams (C/T, settlement, youth, HP for example) to elaborate and implement mental health and well being programs and services operating in an integrated manner
  • Act as a resource for community groups and staff by facilitating workshops, seminar, information sessions or groups; by providing consultation, referrals and information, and by advocating on behalf of or for groups in the community.
  • Mobilize the existing human and material resources in the community to enhance the capacity of the community to affect social change by developing self-help and social support networks, building coalitions and fostering grassroots leadership.
  • Maintain familiarity with newcomer, immigrant and refugee mental health related services and programs in the community, and share this information organizationally as appropriate.  Develop and maintain information resources for the Centre and informational/ educational displays on selected health topics as required.

Project Management

  • Develop and manage community based projects in conjunction with other staff that are responsive to mental health needs, and in accordance with the strategic directions of the Centre, using a project management approach.
  • Generate a process of stakeholder ownership, including community agencies, clients/ participants and community members, in the planning, delivery and evaluation of projects based on our values of interdisciplinary teams and collaborative approaches.
  • Lead the Implementation of projects by:
  1. Participating in budget development and managing project activities as required
  2. Overseeing  effective delivery of project activities
  3. Using a shared leadership, team based approach , provide guidance and direction to students, volunteers and project related staff to achieve identified project or program outcomes.
  • Evaluate programs to ensure that objectives are met and recommend changes to the day to day running of the projects based on community input.

Research, Advocacy and Social Action:

  • Initiate, carry-out, participate in or monitor research on newcomer, immigrant, refugee mental health needs involving and mobilizing the community of interest around the research, and from the research, develop clear plans and positions upon which the Centre should base program and advocacy efforts.
  • Initiate appropriate links with educational and other institutions to promote the availability of the Centre as a learning site.
  • Support and participate in community based research initaitives, knowledge mobilization and social action in relation to mental health needs of immigrants and refugees.

Administration:

  • Participate in Centre and Board committees, work groups, projects, and chair and or take minutes at such meetings as may be required.
  • Identify the need for or participate in the development of policies and protocols, and follow all protocols and policies of the Centre.
  • Develop an annual workplan in conjunction with your supervisor, identifying actions items, learning goals and professional development needs.
  • Submit program statistics and reports on a timely basis.
  • Participate in the development of funding proposals.
  • Contribute to the vision, mission, values, principles and strategic directions of the Centre.
  • Carry out other duties as may be assigned from time to time.

 Qualifications and Experience:

  • Ability to speak and write fluently in a language of one of the priority groups of the Centre;
  • Graduate degree in Social Work and registration with OCSWSSW or a combination of relevant education and work experience;
  • Minimum 3 years front-line experience in community based program planning, implementation and evaluation;
  • Thorough understanding of and experience implementing diverse, culturally competent mental health focused  service delivery strategies, for newcomer, immigrants and refugees
  • Thorough understanding of mental health promotion and community development principles;
  • Experience working with low-income and other priority groups;
  • Experience working with multi-racial, multi-lingual communities and teams;
  • Success in partnership development and funding proposal writing;
  • Experience managing project budgets;
  • Experience supervising/ mentoring staff, students or volunteers.

Salary: $62,710 – 75,638/ Annual

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week
