About us:

University Planning (UP) operates within the larger umbrella of University Planning, Design & Construction (UPDC), which integrates and coordinates areas of planning, project development, design and engineering, space management, and project management to deliver projects for the betterment of our campuses. With over 215 buildings of which over 50 are either listed or designated as being of historic significance on 284 Hectares (700 acres) of land, 1.6 milliongross square metres (17.1 million gross square feet) of facilities, space and holdings making the University of Toronto one of the largest landowners in the Greater Toronto Area.

University Planning is responsible for tri-campus master planning,visioning and planning of major capital projects and renovations, managing the development planning approvals process, and liaising with key stakeholders both internal and external to the University. UP provides direct assistance to all departments, divisions and faculties planning for capital projects, space utilization studies, divisional master plans, feasibility studies, heritage and public realm projects. The department is engaged in a range of activities that impact the physical character of the campuses through guiding the relationship of the University's buildings and open spaces. UP leads the planning for appropriate accommodation of the University's teaching, research activities, and housing needs, to be an asset in the broader urban community.

The UP team plays a critical role in shaping the physical experience of the University campuses in their unique contexts.

Your opportunity:

As a Planning Analyst, you will be engaged on a diverse range of projects, of various typologies and complexities. You will play a key role in the development of university sites, from pre-planning and feasibility studies to space programming and analysis, and envisioning new models to enhance our built and open space environments. You will maintain knowledge of the University’s campus-wide frameworks including campus master plans, open space plans, city approved development plans and applicable zoning by-laws, as well as monitor campus-wide related matters such as adjacent developments, interfaces with the City on ROW / infrastructure construction (or other), and activities that may impact University capital projects or the campus experience. You will support municipal policy review related to the University of Toronto’s mission at the tri-campus level. You will provide top-level service to stakeholders and clients and support planning projects. You will also assist in preparing the University’s submission to the Council of Ontario Universities for its Triennial Inventory of Physical Facilities of Ontario Universities (2019-20). You will develop 3D renderings and massing studies, test space layouts and functional plans, develop graphic presentations and engage in client meetings. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Developing project schedules including milestones, critical path, timelines, deliverables and reporting
  • Liaising with clients to ensure designs reflect operational requirements and supporting due diligence, site development review studiesand feasibility study analysis, while liaising with consultants as required.
  • Resolving issues within the scope of the role and escalating problems as required
  • Gathering information in preparation for planning reports and overseeing campus spatial information such as maps, property ownership data, and the campus model.
  • Keeping well-informed on current technologies, best practices and industry standards such as monitoring municipal approvals (ex. community council, city council, heritage preservation board)
  • Keeping well-informed on policies, procedures, regulations and new technology
  • Overseeing select small-scale capital projects including document preparation, stakeholder meetings, and governance approvals.
  • Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists

Essential Qualifications:

  • Advanced College Diploma (3 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum six to seven (6-7) years experience in the fields of planning / urban design / architecture .
  • Demonstrated experience working in a decentralized institutional environment or equivalent experience
  • Ability to create compelling presentations and visual communications / renderings.
  • Demonstrated project management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service skills
  • Demonstrated excellent computer skills (e.g. Microsoft 365 and CAD)
  • Demonstrated excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated superior report writing skills, verbal communication skills and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate excellent record keeping skills and management of correspondence.
  • Demonstrate political acumen.
  • Work collaboratively with University Planning (UP), University Planning, Design and Construction (UPDC), other internal University stakeholders as well as other academic faculties / departments and external stakeholders

Assets (Nonessential):

  • Diploma in Planning would be preferred.
  • Architectural experience is an asset.
  • BIM experience and skills would be an asset.
