Research Project Summary:

Our team was awarded a TEAM Grant from the Canadian Institute of Health Research titled, “Enabling shared decision making and improving outcomes in patients with gastrointestinal malignancies: Applications of predictive analytics for personalized cancer care.” Our team of patients, cancer survivors, oncologists, researchers and policymakers are uniquely positioned to build a one-of-a-kind cancer information and care planning platform—called OurCancerCareTools—to support Canadians from diagnosis to treatment and end of life planning. We will leverage large, population-level databases from multiple Canadian provinces and apply cutting-edge methodology, such as machine learning, to support evidence-based decision-making in cancer care

Additionally, we have been awarded a Canadian Cancer Society Grant “INTEGRAL: The Impact of Nutritional STatus and MicronutriEnts in Patients with Gastric Cancer: A Study to Raise Survival And Quality of Life” to examine patient outcomes and create best evidence for patient and provider resources.

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing management of subsets of the described projects, while keeping track of deadlines and performing general research administrative tasks.

Key Responsibilities Related to Research Project

  • Organize and analyze Delphi consensus panel.
  • Manage trans-Provincial database.
  • Manage scoping reviews.
  • Support ongoing patient and provider education efforts.
  • Coordinate Canadian Gastric Cancer Association (CaGCA) conference and newsletters.
  • Provide additional support for other quantitative and qualitative studies, as needed.

General Research Assistant Duties

  • Prepare REB applications and renewals.
  • Prepare grant reports, including budget summaries.
  • Coordinate team meetings, prepare materials and agendas and produce and distribute minutes.
  • Monitor project timelines.
  • Assistance with ongoing research projects
  • Other tasks to assist in ongoing research of the team, as appropriate.

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in health services related discipline. A master’s degree is an asset.
  • Previous qualitative or quantitative research experience preferred, including REB applications, analysis of large population-based databases, patient interviews/education.
  • Previous experience interviewing cancer patients or similar experience.
  • Previous experience conducting scoping reviews.
  • Familiarity with descriptive statistics
  • Attention to detail and organization.
  • Ability to work closely as a team and provide assistance to support team members.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while achieving specific goals within specific timeframes.
  • Time management skills to manage and prioritize workload and timelines.
  • Flexibility and ability to work under tight deadlines.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Willing and able to rapidly learn new tasks.
  • Work from home may be an option, however in-person attendance will be required at Sunnybrook Bayview Campus, 3-4 times per month.
