Position Summary

A Research Technician I position is available at the Toronto General Hospital Research Institute. The successful candidate will contribute to studies aimed at developing novel stem cell-based therapies and the generation of in vitro models of disease related to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Duties

Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the Research Technician I will be responsible for the organization and maintenance of common lab reagents/stocks as well as frozen cell stocks, training new lab member in different techniques including but not limited to cell culture, RT-qPCR and cell imaging (brightfield and fluorescent) and organization of the lab. They will also support the work of other lab members by preparing reagents, maintaining equipment, checking inventories, and assisting/coordinating other routine experiments in the lab.

Qualified candidates should have more than 6 months of prior experience in routine cell culture and quality control (e.g. flow cytometry and other molecular techniques). They must demonstrate core competency in written and verbal communication as well as the communication and maintenance of records of experimental data.

Qualified candidates should be capable of working well with people from different disciplines and with varying levels of technical expertise.

Candidates must also be available to complete cell culture duties at least one weekend day per month (Saturday or Sunday, ~2 hours per day, 1-2 times per month).

Prior experience with pluripotent stem cell culture, differentiation and manipulation is a major asset.

Qualifications:
• At minimum a Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field
• A minimum of six months related technical experience
• Self-motivated and willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description
• Experience in routine cell culture and other general lab analysis techniques
• Core competency in verbal and written communication skills
• Maintenance of well-organized records and documentation, inventories, data entry and analysis
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Excellent attention to detail and meticulous bench work
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
