Job Summary

Our research is applied and aims to investigate and test the implementation of promising policy ideas. We use the full spectrum of methodologies, including literature reviews, primary quantitative and qualitative studies, and policy analysis work in partnership with stakeholders such as community organizations, think tanks, government and universities.

We are seeking a full-time Researcher who will conduct qualitative research examining the barriers and enablers to primary care access for equity-deserving communities in Ontario. As part of a small project team, the researcher will work with stakeholder groups and patient advisory groups and gather primary data through focus groups and interviews. The outputs of this project will include research reports and a plain language report that will identify community-based solutions to improving primary care access.

While this project will be the core responsibility for this Researcher position, the successful applicant will be expected to contribute to other projects at Wellesley Institute.

Key Qualifications

Successful applicants will have demonstrated:

  • Expertise in the social determinants of health, and health equity
  • Expertise in the use of qualitative research methods and conducting community-based research studies.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect and thematically analyze qualitative data from a variety of methodologies including interviews and focus groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and document findings to develop policy-relevant recommendations.
  • Knowledge of academic and grey literature related to primary health care and health equity needs and the social determinants of health and populations across Ontario.
  • Knowledge and experience with the use of NVivo
  • Strong interpersonal skills and strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines among multiple tasks.
  • A collaborative and interdisciplinary approach to research

Ideally, the successful applicant would also have:

  • Relevant work history in tracking health issues and the social determinants across populations
  • A proven record of communicating qualitative research findings to non-specialist audiences, especially policymakers.
  • Experience with mixed research methods.
  • The ability to work successfully with communities and to work as part of a team.

General Information

We are located in downtown Toronto. This is an on-site position. We are currently working a hybrid of onsite/remote but may return to on-site only.

Starting Salary Range

$70,000 – $80,000 plus benefits.
