Overview

THIS IS A TEMPORARY REPLACEMENT POSITION FOR A BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEE. Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement.

Reporting to the Director, Institutional Research, the incumbent provides research and analysis on a wide range of college activities to support college-wide decisions regarding academic program offerings, student retention and success, as well as overall institutional effectiveness. This is a multi-faceted position responsible for collecting, retrieving and analyzing data from a variety of sources, assessing additional information needs and working in collaboration with academic and service departments to identify solutions and produce accurate, reliable and user-friendly reports for both internal and external audiences. Key responsibilities include: leading complex research studies, developing and coordinating college-wide surveys; retrieving and analyzing data; and preparing and presenting reports. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Responsibilities

  • Providing research expertise and analytical support to strategic initiatives and College projects through collaboration with key Academic and service areas of the College
  • Consulting with stakeholders and/or participating on working groups and committees to determine research needs and conduct statistical analysis as well as interpret findings and recommend courses of action
  • Facilitating the Faculty Feedback Surveys including liaising with various college departments
  • Supporting strategic planning and college accountability activities including business planning and environmental scans
  • Designing and implementing research projects from conception to completion, recommending the appropriate methodology to test hypotheses, make inferences, determine causality, evaluate impacts and monitor trends including:
    • Liaising with clients to understand their research needs; proposing appropriate research methods; developing work plans by negotiating goals, roles, timelines and processes
    • Collecting primary and secondary data through web and paper-based surveys, focus groups, and searches
    • Acquiring data from various databases, in various formats, and converting it to the most appropriate format to meet research needs; creating, maintaining, and manipulating various data sets suitable for presentation
    • Completing statistical analyses; ensuring accuracy and creating research finding reports; designing and preparing statistical charts, tables, dashboards and graphs using a variety of computer software applications
    • Writing research reports; developing and presenting PowerPoint presentations to various college constituents

Requirements

  • Successfully completed a four year post secondary degree in the social sciences or a related field of study with courses focusing on, research methodology, survey research, multivariate statistical analysis and/or database management
  • A Masters degree would be an asset
  • Five years of experience working in a research environment (social and/or market research experience preferred), working with a diverse clientele, where duties included developing research methodologies to meet particular research needs, conducting analyses, and writing reports and/or presenting findings
  • Extensive experience with web-based survey methods and specialized software (e.g. Explorance Blue, Remark, Q-fi, etc.)
  • Experience with data coding, development of syntax and data documentation
  • Experience working with very large and/or relational databases, data mining and reporting
  • Computer skills and experience with:
    • Enterprise databases
    • Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Power BI, etc.)
    • Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS)
    • Explorance Blue, Cognos and/or data visualization tools would be considered an asset
  • Demonstrated experience with project management, client communication, and consulting skills to design and implement research projects
  • Communication (verbal and written) and presentation skills with a demonstrated ability to communicate the meanings and implications of data and research findings to a variety of audiences
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills with the ability to develop and maintain positive productive working relationships
  • Demonstrated analytical, problem solving, and evaluation skills to analyze and translate client requirements
  • Time management and organizational skills to set priorities and handle multiple competing responsibilities and deadlines
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Experience working in an institutional research environment and/or in the postsecondary sector is an asset
