Speakers
Dr. Anna Triandafyllidou has joined Ryerson University as the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Migration and Integration to lead an internationally recognized seven-year research program. She was previously based in Italy at the European University Institute as the Robert Schuman Chair of the Global Governance Programme. Her main areas of research and teaching are the governance of cultural diversity, migration, and nationalism from a European and international perspective. She received her Ph.D. from the European University Institute and has held various teaching, research, and consultancy positions with national ministries, research agencies and universities across Europe. Over the past 15 years, she has raised approximately 12 million Euro in research funds from European, international and national sources, and co-ordinated 30 international research projects in these research fields.
Dr. Georgeta Pourchot is Associate Director of Graduate Level Recruitment and Alumni Relations at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University and Program Coordinator of the International Refugee Research Project– a strategic network of international researchers and policy leaders on refugee issues in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa. Born in Romania, Dr. Pourchot was a founding member of the Romanian Green Party and was elected to the House of Deputies in the first free elections of May 1990 after the Cold War. Her first job in the United States was with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington DC think tank, where she managed hands-on programs to develop legislative and policy reform in a variety of sectors. Her main areas of teaching and research expertise are foreign policy, refugees, terrorism, democratization, international security, Central Europe, Russia and Eurasia. She holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and Affairs from Old Dominion University.
Dr. Usha George is a Professor in the School of Social Work at Ryerson University and Director of the Ryerson Centre for Immigration and Settlement (RCIS). She is the former Interim Vice-President of Research and Innovation and Dean of the Faculty of Community Services. Dr. George came to Ryerson in 2006 from the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Toronto, where she had been Associate Dean since 1999. Her main areas of research and professional activity are social work and development with diverse communities, newcomer settlement and integration, and diversity and organizational change. She has extensive university teaching, research, and administrative experience in North America, as well as in India, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. She works in partnership with several community agencies on research and knowledge transfer activities and has worked closely with a number of government agencies. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria.
